Faith Community Praises Designation of Newest National Monument: Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks (May 2014)
Faith communities around the country are celebrating the designation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks as the newest national monument announced by President Obama yesterday (May 27, 2014). This monument follows proposed legislation from New Mexico senators Heinrich and Udall late last year. Protection for this piece of creation was recently praised in a letter signed by seven regional faith leaders, and local, state, and national faith bodies applauded the announcement.

Alaskan Religious Leaders Call on EPA to Finalize Bristol Bay Watershed Assessment (December 2013)
Five of Alaska’s senior religious leaders urged the EPA to finalize its Bristol Bay Watershed Assessment before the end of the year, a goal previously set by the agency. Faith leaders are a vital part of the coalition formed to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine, which also includes Alaska Natives, commercial and sport fishermen, outdoors organizations and businesses, chefs and restaurant owners, jewelers, conservationists, and many others.

This letter included signatures from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Rocky Mountain Synod, the Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces, the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande, the New Mexico Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Rio Grande Mission of the Community of Christ, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of the Southwest.
