San Gabriel Mountains
The San Gabriel Mountains are an oasis nestled in the backyard of more than 17 million Americans. Not only is this piece of Creation beautiful, it also enables the wellbeing of God’s people. This area makes up 70% of the open space in LA County, provides one-third of the drinking water for LA County residents, and aides in the cleaning of the air that people breathe. Seven faith leaders asked President Obama to designate the San Gabriel Mountains a national monument in a letter to the Administration. The leaders, representing over 700 congregations in southern California, hail from the Los Angeles area of the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ in Southern California and Nevada, the Pacific-Southwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the San Gabriel Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Southern California Mission Center of the Community of Christ, as well as local ecumenical advocacy organization Progressive Christians Uniting.
