​Is a River Sacred?

In his powerful book “Is a River Alive?”, author Robert Macfarlane wrestles with the titular question and its ramifications: if a river is a living thing, does it have rights and who speaks for it?

Our inaugural Creation Justice course, led by Director of Theological Education and Formation Derrick Weston and Father Pete Nunnally of Water and Wilderness Church, takes that question further and asks: Is a River Sacred?
Using Macfarlane's book as a springboard, this course explores:

• The sanctity of Creation through the Biblical tradition
• Indigenous ways of knowing that have long understood rivers as living and sacred
• What this sacredness means for spiritual leaders and activists protecting access to the Divine in nature

All participants are registered for an online screening of the documentary Riverkeeper, on the fight for environmental justice for Atlanta's South River — a fitting way to engage this year's Season of Creation theme, "Immersion in Living Waters."
