Scripture Sunday: Season of Creation James 1:17-27

James 1:17-27
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave birth to us by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. 19 You must understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger, 20 for human anger does not produce God's righteousness.
21 Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. 23 For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; 24 for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. 25 But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act--they will be blessed in their doing.
26 If any think they are religious and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

James might not be the first book that comes to mind when discussing creation justice, but this Season of Creation, we will focus our Scripture Sundays on the book of James. The Season of Creation, observed from September 1st through October 4th, is an ecumenical period during which churches around the world unite in prayer, dialogue, and action on ecological issues, helping to renew humanity's relationship with the rest of creation and the Creator.

At the beginning of James, we are reminded of the "Father of lights" (1:17). This title recalls Genesis, where God created the greater lights for the day and the lesser lights for the night. In the Gospel of John, we are told that Jesus is the light that came from the Father into the world, and that everything was made through Him (John 1:9-10). Just as the sun’s light sustains life on earth, so the Son’s light sustains the world. Later in John, we learn that if we believe in the light, we can become children of light (John 12:36), bringing life to those around us.

The Father of lights begat the sun, the Son, the children of light, and also begat the word of truth (1:18). This should not surprise us, as John teaches that Jesus is the Word, who was with God, is God, and through whom all things were created to bring life, which is the light (John 1:1-4). As those who share in Jesus’ resurrection, we can become the first fruits of creation, offering ourselves to God as a worthy sacrifice (1:18).

James then challenges us to ask: What does it look like to be the first fruits of creation? It means being quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger, and refraining from evil, immorality, or worldly desires. The world we live in encourages us to be fast, greedy, and materialistic, oftentimes using social media and the news to incite anger and hatred.

How do we counter these temptations and the world’s allure? We look to Jesus—Jesus, the Word given to us through the Holy Spirit, Jesus, who is reflected in creation, bearing His image in all that He made. We look to the light, which, through the Word, illuminates our path. James makes it clear that knowing the truths of the Word should lead us to action: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep ourselves unstained by the world (1:27).

During the Season of Creation, we are invited to reconnect with creation, the Church, and God. James calls us to resist the ways of the world—not to rush into buying the next thing, choose convenience over conscience, or ignore the sources of our purchases—but to be slow and deliberate. He urges us to recognize that our choices and actions are deeply interwoven with the environment and have a direct impact on the most vulnerable, such as orphans and widows.

James also reminds us that human anger does not produce God’s righteousness. While there is often much anger surrounding ecological issues, anger that reflects God’s own grief over the harm done to His creation, both human and nonhuman- James guides us to let go of anger over things that ‘do not matter,’ human things. We should let our anger move us to be doers of the Word. James urges us to stop rushing, to not let anger blind us, and to seek Christ in all things, leading us to direct action. He doesn’t offer technical fixes for the environmental crisis but calls for a change in the posture of our heart, a transfiguration that can lead to true and lasting change.

One of the unique aspects of the Season of Creation, and Creation Justice Ministries, is that it is an ecumenical movement, bringing together the Church—Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant—for a common goal. By the grace of God, it will take all of us to make a change in the world. When uniting across different denominations, there is no better time to heed James’ exhortation to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, and to motivate one another to be doers of the Word.

I pray that none of us forget what Jesus looks like as we live as children of light in the world.
