Threats Facing Alaska
The Trump Administration has begun the process to offer roughly 16 million acres of Creation in the Western Arctic Reserve for oil and gas drilling. This comes at the same time Congress has proposed to use the Congressional Review Act to roll back the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Record of Decision (ROD) that intended to address some of the most glaring legal issues with the 2020 plan and to provide some additional protections for polar bear habitats and the calving ground of the Porcupine Caribou Herd, known to the Gwich’in as Izhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit - the Sacred Place Where Life Begins.
Both of these decisions would significantly negatively impact the pristine wilderness of this sacred place. As Christians, we believe caring for Creation is a moral responsibility. The lands and waters of Alaska are not just economic assets – they are home to our Indigenous neighbors, vital habitat for wildlife, and among the most pristine places on earth. Protecting this sacred land has profound ecological, social and moral implications. Take action below to urge Congress and the Administration to care for Creation in Alaska!

Poem Reflection Avery Davis Lamb Creator of caribou and tundra,
You who called forth light on the first morning and who still breathe life into the frozen north, we give thanks for the holiness of the Arctic Refuge -- for the waters that glimmer beneath the midnight sun, for the calving grounds where new life begins, and for the Gwich’in people who have kept covenant with this land since time beyond memory. Forgive us, O God, for the ways we have treated Your sacred earth as a storehouse rather than a sanctuary, as a resource rather than a relative. Forgive us for the noise of our drilling that drowns out the songs of Your creation. Give us the courage to stand where life begins -- to resist the powers that seek to exploit and destroy, to join our prayers with the caribou, with the polar bears in their dens, with the people whose hearts are bound to this land. Bless those who lead and legislate, that they may find it in their hearts to protect what You have declared good. Let justice roll down like Arctic rivers, and righteousness like thawing streams that renew the face of the earth. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who was born among the creatures, baptized in living water, and reconciles all things in heaven and on earth. Amen. |
